As the FDA rule indicate that the adults 18 years of age and older can buy hearing aids for themselves Over-the-counter. For consumers 18 years of age and older with perceived mild to moderate hearing loss, you have the option to purchase OTC hearing aids without a medical examination.

It's sometimes possible to get a hearing aid over the counter; that is, without first consulting with an expert. While this is possible, it's not recommended. There are many reasons why it's better to consult with an expert. You don't necessarily need to see a medical doctor, but you should meet with an audiologist.

An audiologist is a health-care professional specializing in identifying, diagnosing, treating, and monitoring disorders of the auditory and vestibular systems. Audiologists are trained to evaluate peripheral vestibular disorders originating from pathologies of the vestibular portion of the inner ear. They also provide treatment for certain vestibular and balance disorders such as Benign Paroxysmal Positional Vertigo (BPPV). In addition, many audiologists work as auditory or acoustic scientists in a research capacity.

When you get hearing test - that mean he/she are audiologist and will test how much you lost your hearing, and this usually not too much charge. And then they will give you suggestion how to choice the type of hearing aids devices and what is the product price. Therefore, you don't need doctor for this. If you are not happy with the hearing testing, then you can go somewhere else for test again and offer for different price and type of hearing aid. So in another words, you can shopping around as the price vary from hearing aids store to store online or hearing aids center offline anywhere.
